Compatibility: What is the model of the printer? Which Operating System is installed on your Mac? And what year is your Mac? I ask because Compatibility might be the issue here. So, research the compatibility by going to the manufacturer’s divers site.
Researching Compatibility: Start by visiting the manufacturer’s Web site. From there, access the driver download site (Found under the Support link) . There, you’d see if an Operating Systems is incompatible when it installed on a particular Mac. Of course if incompatible, downgrade the operating system, or purchase a new printer.
Accessibility: As for accessibility, security software would be playing a key role in this. Firewall settings would disable accessibility to ports and Parental Control settings overrule permissions for the installation of software. So, rid of the software.
Single this Out by User: Create a new Administrator user to single this out. If the new administrator works with this, then it would be an accessibility issue, most likely, and not a compatibility issue (Mac model and Printer model) like mentioned above.

Have you tried the Brother site to get the latest drivers offered for OS X?
If all else fails give VueScan a try. You can run it in demo mode to see if it will recognize your scanner and scan with it. It's an excellent bit of scanning software.
Please open Image Capture to see if it can see the scanner. Image Capture is pre-installed on your computer. Below is a link to learn how to use Image Capture to scan items. I use it all the time with my Brother MFC-8900LDW color laser multifunction printer.
