Removing Mail Messages

Mail is taking up a lot of memory on my Mac. I want to delete a lot of it, but I understand it is not as simple as just trashing messages. I have gmail; if I go to the gmail website and delete the messages there will they also disappear from my Mac, iPhone etc? Or do I have to delete them twice?

If you don't want a message to stay in your Trash for 30 days, you can permanently delete it.

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. On the left side of the page, scroll down, then click More  Trash.
  3. Check the box next to messages you want to permanently delete, then click Delete forever.
  4. Note: The Delete forever option is only available in the Trash. You won’t be able to delete items forever from the Search result view.
  5. To delete all messages in your trash, click Empty Trash now.
