I was working on a spreadsheet, and decided to revert to an earlier version. Then it said the file was invalid. So I tried opening an earlier version on the timeline - but none of them will open. Is there any way to access one, so I don't have to re-do all my work from the last few years?

That doesn't look like Time Machine. That looks like Numbers. Time Machine.app is located in your Applications folder.

Presumably you have a backup system that backs up your Mac to another disk and/or online. (If you don't have one, you should have one.)
