Apple ID

My husband uses my Apple ID for his phone. We're getting divorced, I want him out of y Apple ID, and I do not want to lose any of my files/photos. He only has a phone. I have a Mac, so all of my information in is the cloud, he has a few pictures and minimum contacts. I'm afraid he'll change the password and I'll lose everything, suggestions?

I'd like him to be able to just get his stuff off.

If it true that he can log into iTunes, make up a new id and then everything on his phone will transfer to his new account?

You can change your password to protect your ID and consider doing a name change.

For your husband, have him log out of your ID, and create his own ID. There may be some data loss, but he can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether he wants to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed.
