How can I recycle old Ipads for something in return?

I work as a maintenance worker at a high school. The school has recently undergone massive upgrades to every department and now has no use for the iPads the students previously used so they were going to simply throw them away as the teacher who set them up has left and refuses to offer her Apple account to unlock these iPads. It has to be a massive waste to throw these electronics away as they still function perfectly, no scratches or cracks in the screen, it still turns on, etc, they are just locked. Is there any way to recycle the parts within them for something in return, such as trading them in for something I can use, or even cash at best?

They're basically useless if the person who maintained the accounts refuses to work with you. Maybe Apple can help if you have receipts showing that they were purchased by the school.

I would find it hard to believe that there isn't some contract term that requires this teacher to surrender all information needed to use its own property. It would be like a teacher changing door locks and not providing the keys.

They at least used to have a program to do this.

Hi, JJGodbey,

Good for you for pursuing this! These devices are far, far too valuable to just have them trashed somewhere. I hope you’ll keep pursuing this... They still have a useful life!

Trying to learn more about Apple’s Education Program with schools for supplying devices — there must be rules! — I came across this page (below). I’d suggest trying to contact Apple, directly, thru this?

Because their program must have been utilized for purchase, and if the school is so negligent in how they handle products still having a useful life — for example, could another more disadvantaged school use them? — I’d wonder if your school could be jeopardizing their privilege to use Apple’s Education Program for future students.

Here’s the link. If you didn’t find useful contacts here, I’d suggest calling Apple Support, directly (also below), asking your call to be directed to their Education department: https://www.apple.com/education/

Apple Support (scan down to where there’s a couple saying “Get Support” “Tell us how we can help: https://support.apple.com/

Hope this is helpful!

Linda
