text message not sending to non i-phone contacts

Text message not sending to non i-phone contacts. I’ve had a friend with an i-phone sitting next to me. She can text the non i-phone contact but I cannot.

Settings > Messages > Send as SMS

Check with your carrier to see if the type of message you’re trying to send, like MMS or SMS, is supported.
