Hello there,
my media keys "play/pause" , "forward", "backward" do not work anymore under Mojave 10.14.5.
I already googled a little and mostly found this possible issue: https://major.io/2014/07/30/playpause-button-stopped-working-in-os-x-mavericks/
But: I do not have Chrome installed.
Does anyone have any idea what's could be wrong?

In addition to the good suggestions you already got, test to see if:
-the media keys work on a different account (you can use the guest account for this test)
-the media keys work on your account when booted in Safe Mode

NVRAM reset might work, not sure though. Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
Otherwise I'm at my wits end :)
Check if the last option in the keyboard settings is unchecked. If it's checked then volume controls don't work. You'll find the keyboard settings in the System Preferences.
Edit:
Latest version of Mojave is 10.14.6. So you can update your system to get it and it's supplemental update.

I amde an update to 10.14.6 and now it works again.
Strange... I dind´t find anything related to this in the release notes.
But it´s solved for me.
This option is not activated, so this is not the cause.
Is there any other possible cause?
