External Hard Drive issues

I have two external hard drives. I am trying to move files from one to the other using my MAC. I have previously used these with a windows laptop and had no issues however I am really stuck as I am unsure of what to do without losing files. From what I have read I think I need to format the drives etc but I want to be totally sure before doing this. All assistance would be appreciated.

If you want to use your external drives on a Mac, you have to format them. Important to know: all files will be erased by formatting.

Use disk utility on your Mac to format your external drives. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208496

Choose MacOs Extended (journaled) if you want to use your external drive only on a Mac.

Choose ExFat if you want to use the drives on Mac and Windows
