Not able to see photos from iphone when plugged into Mac and in the Photos App to import

I used to be able to plug my iphone into my Mac, Go to the Photos on my Mac, and import the photos I wanted. Now they do not show up. I have checked settings and cannot figure it out. I do not want to back up photos to the cloud as I do a hard drive back up of my Mac.

I have checked settings and cannot figure it out.

What are the settings > Your Name > iCloud Photos? Are all iCloud settings for Photos disabled in the iPhone?

Which version of iOS is running on the iPhone? Which version of MacOS X is running on your Mac?

If you are running iOS 11 or iOS on the Mac - what is the setting for "Settings > Camara > Formats"? Is it set to Most Compatible or High Efficiency?
