I can't get Safari or Mail to connect to the Internet although Chrome, Firefox and Web Mail work just fine on my 2017 iMac. My VPN started asking for authentication this week and then refused to process the information claiming I wasn't connected to the Internet. I recently switched from FIOS to Altice One although I don't think that's the problem. Are Safari and Mail corrupted in some way?

Suggestion given below may or may not be helpful.
I don't use a vpn to test.
Deselect Proxies, if selected.
System Preference > Network > Advanced > Proxies Tab
Unlock the lock at the bottom left corner if you have to.
Under "Select a protocol to configure”,uncheck any box if checked.
Click "OK" then "Apply”.

It appears to be a VPN problem although I can't rule out an incompatibility between my new cable box and the VPN which started the whole problem. Mail and Safari are now connecting perfectly after uninstalling the VPN. I should hear back from tech support tomorrow.
If you quit/turn off the VPN, will the programs connect? You may have a VPN problem, not a Safari and Mail problem. Have you contacted the Developer of the VPN?
