problems resetting OS X Leopard

Hello,

I have an unusual situation here. I am a helpdesk tech  for over 25 years and that is out of work  for over a year. I am trying desperately to update my skills both in the windows universe and to finally add the Apple universe to my list of skills.   I have been sort of lucky enough to have a brother that was given an old (and I do mean old the original box has a date on it of 2009)  13 inch MacBook which has OS X leopard installed. The person that gave the MacBook to my brother was getting rid of it for whatever reason and they left original documents on it and I would like to go ahead and kick the tires on this thing by starting out with  forming a factory reset on this. I am having problems doing this here is what I’ve tried so far.

I tried looking at the disk to see if there was a recovery partition and because my Mac skills are extremely limited I could not see how to find if there is a second partition on this but it doesn’t seem like there is.

I tried looking at the system preferences and the utilities and although I do find something that will let me erase it I don’t want to just do that blindly in case I don’t have the OS X software for reinstallation. Right now the machine is working but I would like to have it go back to being clean and pristine.

I did a Google search based on how to reset a MacBook with OS X leopard to factory settings. The results I got told me to restart the machine and while it is restarting hold down the Apple key and the letter are which should bring up the restore utility. Here’s a big problem it doesn’t bring up the restore utility.

I do not see any program that would let me burn the OS to disc  and yes it does have a built-in CD or DVD player I haven’t looked at the details on the box to see if it is CD only or DVD. Which ever it is it does have the ability to write a disc.

I looked throughout the entire box which happens to be the original box that the unit came in and there is no OS disc.

This machine was not bought by me as I stated so I have no illusions about getting support from Apple for it because of both that reason and the age of the machine they would probably crack up laughing in my face and I would not blame them.  I am wondering if there is a way that I can either download the system software which as stated is OS X leopard or if there’s a way I can contact apple explain what’s going on and see if there’s a way they can send me a disc  which I am doubting will happen.

And external wrinkle to my whole situation here is that since I have been out of work for over a year **** I wish I could get a job I have been trying but because my skills on paper don’t look good because I have suffered all my life from ADD and cannot get through a textbook or a certification exam I look terrible on paper. I am also 52 years old and that plus the no certifications on paper plus I’ve never really done much with server except to do minor work in Active Directory  has not helped my job prospects at all plus I also don’t do networking and don’t do command line anything because my first computer way back in the day was an apple which I don’t write into the visual GUI  and totally absolutely ignored learning DOS or command line scripting in anyway.   Sorry to digress basically what I’m saying is due to my financial situation where I’m actually working on going on disability and social services for food stamps and general assistance I have no Internet in my house and I have to rely upon the hotspot on my iPhone 8 plus which is slow as **** because once I hit the 15 Gb limit I get dialed down from being 4G to 3.5 G and then down to 2.5 G  so I can forget downloading for my house I would have to go to a Barnes & Noble or a library and sit there for hours.   So I’m really looking for a miracle of being able to get OS X leopard on disc somewhere.

Yes I really do want to do this because I need to kick the tires on any sort of an Apple machine I don’t care how old it is having this machine is a blessing and I really want to get my hands wet with working on an Apple machine. I additionally have one last question for some reason when I plugged in the MacBook to electricity the battery indicator keeps saying not charging.  I am praying that it does not mean that the battery is shot, this machine has not been charged for God knows how long on top of the several months I’ve already had it and kept it in the box. Although I am praying that the battery is not sharp as a tech I am really believing that’s probably what it is.

Thank you for listening to all my nonsense I really appreciate it and I’m hoping somebody will be kind and read this whole thing and help me out with what I need to know.

Sincerely,

WndrWmn

That generation Mac with Leopard 10.5 does not have a recovery partition.

It included a DVD with the original install bits on it. And all software in those days came on DVD or some came from the internet.

Snow Leopard 10.6 is the next major release, and came on DVD as well. You had to upgrade to 10.6.6 to get the App Store, which was needed to upgrade beyond Snow Leopard.

Go Here: How to Reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support

It lists 3 options. Use the one that suits your needs:

  • Command (⌘)-R

Install the latest macOS that was installed on your Mac.

  • Option-⌘-R

Upgrade to the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.

  • Shift-Option-⌘-R

Install the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.

Proceed from there as Necessary.

Note:

Disassociate then Re-associate this Mac:

Is this device is associated to your brother’s, friend’s Apple Account? Whomever’s Apple Account it is associated, have the Apple User disassociate this Mac from their own Apple Account. Perhaps, ask your brother to have them do so.

Any of the older versions of OS came only on install media and cannot be downloaded - it was/has never been available as a download. Only incremental updates to the OS can be. Additionally, in those days, the disks were machine specific: if you bought one with, say, 10.6.6 on it, that is the version on the DVD. You can't install an earlier version. The only thing you could download would be an update to the 10.6.6 which would not be a full installer, so you need the 10.6.6 disk first.

You can also still buy a full installer for 10.7 (I believe); but that is also only available by purchasing it. And I just checked - yes, it is still available, but again, it is $20 and you must have 10.6.6 first.

So, you can't do anything with that machine unless you can get hold of a machine specific disk; you could call Apple and ask if they still have replacement disks, but a) that is highly unlikely at this point and b) they will charge you a nominal charge plus shipping I believe.

There is no free option.

You would probably need to acquire newer Mac OS X than Leopard 10.5.8;

if so, could not upgrade without retail install DVD for Snow Leopard 10.6.3

and those usually aren't available except through online main Apple store.

The other reply suggests keyboard commands to run macOS Recovery, &

that would not be available IF the macbook still runs older Leopard 10.5.8.

My old 2006 MacBook (first edition) still runs Leopard10.5.8 and nicely;

but the issue there with older Mac OS X, is there are few (to no) options

for a web browser. Even Snow Leopard 10.6.8 has nothing available.

But the 10.6.8 with last update steps, may be adequate to access the

online Mac App store; then you could try for newer OS X.

Maybe El Capitan 10.11.6 or Sierra 10.12, or later depending on hardware.

You would need to start the computer from an official system DVD installer

to erase and re-install the hard drive. To access App Store requires the Mac

be upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and then several key update steps

to allow that system to gain access to newer 'system installer' downloads.

My old MacBook1.1 (13-inch 1.83GHz coreduo) first edition could only run

up to system 10.6.8 with the retail install DVD and then download final bits.

For a browser, I've found TenFourFox (installed in unsupported fashion) to

be adequate; and fairly stable. It could work, but your mileage may vary.

And the details to run custom browser intended for pre-Intel Mac have

you carefully install the 10.4Fox according to instructions. A later OS is

recommended if your mac can be upgraded to get a newer supported

Mac OS X; or one that could run Firefox. (instead of safari browser)

Good luck & happy trails!

Hello,

Thank you for all of that wonderful information is definitely 100% helpful. I do have one subsequent question. The download link that you sent me can nappy downloaded by a Windows machine? As you saw in my original description I do not have Internet in my apartment because of financial issues I would have to go to a Barnes & Noble or a library to use a plain old Wi-Fi and that would mean I’d have to be there for a long while to get that downloaded and I would have to take the MacBook with me, which would not be a problem it’s an inconvenience I have to deal with from time to time but I do have a relative that has a corporate Wi-Fi they could use which would be even faster than the library or Barnes & Noble and he does have the ability to burn the software to disk or to a flash drive. I am praying your answer will be yes it can be downloaded to a plain old flash drive through a Windows machine.

Once again thanks for the help I look forward to your reply.

You buy the Snow Leopard DVD from the Apple store online and they will send it to you. It has Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on it which should work with your machine. So, you will not need internet access all that long - just long enough to order the DVD. The price is less than $20.

FWIW, don't try to use recovery; that generation Mac came with install media and does not include the recovery option.

And no, if there is a download involved at some point, you cannot use a Windows PC; it must be a Mac. And, it must be a Mac of similar age/OS version as you would not be able to download any OS older than what the Mac came with.

I think I mentioned in my original posting that I am 100% broke and being supported by my brother while simultaneously working on getting onto Foodstamps and General Assistance and Disability, hence the "no internet in my apt" so $20 for a disk for an ancient MacBook I am only using to learn from is def not in the budget. That reason is why I was asking if I need to use the MacBook to download the OS X Leopard or if I can use my Windows 10 Laptop so I know which machine to pack to go to either the library or my local Barnes & Noble to use their wifi. The reason I was asking the question about which machine I can use to DL is because I don't want to do a DL using a Win10 laptop only to discover when I get home that when I burn the OS to disc using my Win10 that it was not usable on the MB because it processed through a W10 machine.

Additionally the DL link I was provided with is that a link to also have to purchase the OS X Leopard but just through downloading it rather than getting a disc sent to me?

Thank you.

This is a MacBook with a label on the box that refers to the date of 2009 and with me having to go to my brother for every single penny for every bill there’s really no way for me to even justify squeaking out $20 for a desk just so I can knock the tires on a 10-year-old machine. OK this is me venting some frustration here… I wish there was a pirate day for Torrance for Mac.... I have done wonderful over God knows how many years with Torrents for so many wonderful products which has saved me so much money enabling me to continue learning. I truly wish I knew somebody that had a MacBook that might be able to give me a disk to try to copy for this machine.

You were right about the not being free angle I reread what the person had said that provided me with what I thought was a download link to get the software from Apple and I miss read it. It was some sort of a link that I would be able to use after updating the current OS on the machine to get me the ability to have the App Store on it.

This is so frustrating. I am trying to help myself in many ways and invariably I keep hitting dead ends and roadblocks every which way I turn. On my own personal laptop which is a Windows 10 machine also approximately nine years old but working like a charm and a champ I have it all the way Boudet up to 16 gigs of RAM and I have two hard drives installed in it what is a 500 gig hard drive with only windows 10 and programs on that drive and the other drive is solely devoted to my data which is linked up to a Google cloud account to protect my data should my laptop finally decide to go to the happy hunting ground which like any machine or any human being is in evitable. My plans tentatively with that machine is to build a virtual machine on it and install windows server 2012 or 2016 depending on which version I can get my hands on and in the windows universe I have a lot of options for the Mac universe I have zero options. My brother in addition to getting this unit was also given an ancient Dell laptop which has the same problem I can’t restore it there’s no restore program on that one either. I have a cousin that has a computer company and he also gave me another machine because I didn’t want to necessarily mess with my only personal laptop for the server angle so I can keep learning and that machine is on windows vista or seven I think and I tried to upgrade it to 10 and The windows 10 update analyzer says the machine can’t be upgraded to 10 because the hardware isn’t ready. The Dell machine that my brother gave me in addition to this Mac has vista on it and I believe it is vista business because I think that this machine came from the owner of the business that my brother works for and it was his daughters I believe so I believe it has this the business or what you would call enterprise and my cousin was able to get me a vista enterprise disc. Even if that machine isn’t based on vista enterprise out in the windows universe there’s 1 billion ways to do anything and no one will care doubly so because that machine is ancient also because it is vista it is so obsolete that I don’t think Bill Gates Wood bat an eyelash about it.

Let me pose a question from a different creative outside of the box thinking standpoint. I’m going to look at the machine again before the weekend and I will get an exact version number on what is on the machine 0S wise. I will also post the exact model that the machine is and what the specs are so I can know how for updated I can get the machine. Is there any possibility of me updating the machine and along the way it will wind up updating and creating a recovery partition or creating a recovery program that I can use to burn a disc with the OS recovery so that I can go ahead and then recover the machine wiping out everything that’s on there and making it pristine without anyone else’s documents or customizations?

Sep 11, 2019 8:35 PM in response to WndrWmn

Not with that machine. Any of the ideas would need a newer one. You need a DVD and that is all there is to it - unless, by some miracle, you have something other than what was mentioned here on it.

Knowing someone else would also not work. In those days, the install disks were machine and build specific, so only the exact DVD created for that exact model will work.

And, on these forums, we cannot discuss any illegal activity such as downloading/installing (which is stealing) anything from a torrent site that costs money elsewhere.

You need to realize that the only thing that would help you use that machine is to purchase an install DVD.

Sep 12, 2019 3:21 PM in response to WndrWmn

So install Linux and play with that. You can use any system to download an Linux install ISO that your burn to a DVD. Then boot from the Linux ISO DVD.

At most you need a blank DVD you can burn and a computer (Windows, Mac, other) that can access the internet, download a Linux ISO that will work with a Mac, and has a DVD drive that can burn a DVD disk.

Google will find you instructions.
