Why was my Apple ID account locked?

It always seems to be something with my Apple ID. My phones and computers randomly begin to prompt for passwords, forcing me to scramble to enter a correct password (in the morning, on my commute) before I can continue with my life.

Today, this happens again, already annoying — but then my account was "locked" after what I thought was a correct password entry (I copy and pasted it from a password security service). Needless to say, I have unlocked it, and also signed in successfully (with the exact same copy-pasted password).

Why was my account locked? Is there a security issue I should be made aware of? Why is Apple not communicating about this?

If your Apple ID is locked or disabled - "If you or someone else enters your password, security questions, or other account information incorrectly too many times, your Apple ID automatically locks to protect your security and you can't sign in to any Apple services. You can unlock your Apple ID after you verify your identity."

What to do after [or before] you change your Apple ID [email address] or password - "After you change your Apple ID email address or password, you might need to update your sign-in information with any Apple services you're using." - Or if you're seeing persistent disabled messages or repeated requests for the password to your previous Apple ID.

We are users like you and don't know why it was locked. Someone may have tried to sign into your Apple ID and used the wrong password too many times.

You can also add 2 Factor Authentication to your account for more security. If the attempts continue, you might want to consider a name change.
