Trade in for new device

Am I able to receive my new device first before trading my old one in or do I need to return my old device before Im able to buy a new one?

Apple trade-in (in the U.S.) works something like this when doing it through the online store:

Arrange the purchase and trade-in
The third-party trade-in recipient sends you the packing material
The new iPhone is ordered and shipped. Your credit card is billed the full purchase price
You receive the new iPhone
You receive the shipping material to send back the old iPhone
You send back the old iPhone
The third-party trade-in recipient receives and inspects the old iPhone
The third-party trade-in recipient credits your credit card with the value of the old iPhone
