When I place it on the charger the white Apple logo appears, then it turns red and disappears. What does this mean and how do I get it to turn on?

Haven’t used the watch in months, actually got a new phone since I used the watch, so it’s probably not up to date. But I can’t get it to turn on to update it. I keep trying to hold down both buttons until it restarts but it never actually restarts.
Make sure your iPhone and Watch have the latest software updates. Next, reset your Watch by pressing in the crown and side button until you see the Apple logo, then release both.
Sounds if your battery needs replacing. Call your local Apple store and get them to look at it
