Apple Watch Series 5 iOS 12.4.1 iPhone out of date

I cannot pair my Apple Watch because it says my iPhone is out of date. If I try to update my iPhone 6 it says the phone is up to date with 12.4.1 - no possibility to update to iOS 13.

"Apple Watch Series 5 and Apple Watch Series 3 require an iPhone 6s or later with iOS 13 or later."

It seems like you have two choices:

Return the Watch
Purchase a newer iPhone.

You get 14 days to return the Apple Watch for a full refund. Take advantage of this as soon as possible, then you can take you time to decide on whether you want to get a new iPhone (or a used iPhone 6s).
