Safari regularly giving me spinning beachball on a few sites

Hi. I'm using a 2014-era Mac Mini running 10.14.6 and Safari 13.0.1.


I usually start my day reading a number of news sites. One of them has been cnn.com. However, whenever I read a page on their site using Safari, I get the spinning beachball. It's happening when I'm not even playing any videos. I'll read a few paragraphs, then I'll get the beachball, then I'll have to wait until the beachball disappears, then I'll scroll to read a few more paragraphs and then I'll get the beachball again, etc.


This has been happening for months. I have similar problems sometimes on politico.com. Today I'm having the issue on ESPN.com.


I visited those same sites using Chrome and haven't had any problems. I also viewed CNN articles on my iPad and that's working fine too.


Is there a reason why Safari is having problems? Is there any way to troubleshoot it?

Yes.


Here are a few fundamental troubleshooting steps that may help. Some of the information will be redundant but review everything to determine if there is something you may have overlooked.



If you don't get anywhere, you can use the following procedure to determine if the problem is internal or external to your Mac. Causes may involve your router, your ISP, the DNS Server(s) it uses, or certain user-configurable options.


  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Load macOS Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac with a third finger.
  3. At the macOS Utilities screen, release those two fingers.
  4. Choose Get Help Online.
  5. Safari will launch, but it will lack your bookmarks, favorites, history and other preferences.


Determine if the problem persists while using Safari in that mode. After that, restart your Mac normally, and reply with your observations.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply. After pasting the report in a PasteBin page, go to the top of the page, and copy the address in the URL bar. Paste that in a new reply.        Pastebin
