Photos.app can not open my system photoslibrary after Catalina update

After I upgraded to Catalina Photos.app can no longer open my system .photoslibrary. It asks me to choose a different library but when I manually select my photos library it comes back with the same error. What can I do?

Here is what solved it for me.

  1. Go to Settings -> Internet accounts.
  2. Delete the iCloud account. (keep all data)
  3. restart the computer
  4. Enable iCloud account again (this looks like it doesn't work but leave the settings app and go back several minutes later and it will be enabled). You will get multiple popups for passwords etc.
  5. Open Photos.app. It should now work.

So... Got a call from the amazing Support Team from Apple and they managed to fix it.

What we did:

(Worth mentioning in advance: All of my photos and videos are synced with iCloud on my other devices)

  • Create a new Library file (in it's default location: .../users/XXX/Pictures
  • Go to the Photo Preferences > General > Use as System Photo Library
  • Then go to the Photo Preferences > iCloud > "Turn On"

After this, the "check box" on System Preferences > iCloud > Photos was turned on.

Everything is working as aspected now

Note: My original Library file became unusable.

Same thing here. Can't turn on the iCloud Picture Sync. "Checking library..." appears but then nothing happens.

And the only way to open the Photo app is to create a new Library.

If I try to open my default one where I had everything I get this message:

The library could not be opened. Photos was unable to open the library "PhotosLibrary.photoslibrary". (3156)

and afterwards this one:
