How do you reset an iPad if the previous owner died and no one knows the Activation Lock code?

I inherited an iPad when my mother passed away, but I have no idea what the password is and the Activation lock is not allowing me to reset it. Do I trash it or what?

The only thing you can do is find the original purchase receipt for that iPad (shows the matching serial number) and an official death certificate to an Apple Store. With that information, they can reset the iPad. But it's still up to their discretion whether or not they'll do it.
