lost documents folder with catalina update

I updated the system to Catalina and have since lost my documents folder (all my research, all my lectures, all my papers -- anything in the folder has been displaced and disorganized). I do have them backed up on iCloud but now have a 3 to 4 step process of finding/saving these important docs. Advice? Help please.

When you upgrade to Catalina, a second volume is created, and some files may move to a Relocated Items folder.
