Unable to update from 10.11.4 to 10.11.6 (stuck in a loop)

Trying to update old macbook (2008) from 10.11.4 to 10.11.6. One update shows in the Mac App store. When I click ‘update’ it says I need to restart, when I click ‘restart’ it takes me back to the Mac App Store, where a pop up tells me “Available updates have changed. Click “Show Details” to see the available updates.”

I click “Show Details”, but it still just shows the one update I tried to do in the first place.. I am stuck in this loop!

Instead of downloading via the App Store you can download this 10.11.6 Combo from here,

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1885?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Once the download has completed double-click to start the installation.

If there are still problems with installing the update try doing it in Safe Mode.
