I have been purchasing music with iTunes for years on my desktop and laptop. I am totally confused about emails I have been getting that warn me that unless I signup for iTunes Match, I will lose access to my music. There appears to be no clear explanation as to why I need iTunes Match, nor how much it costs. Do I really need it?

You don't need iTunes Match nor Apple Music to play your own music that is on your computer. You can sync as follows:
Use iTunes to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer - Apple Support
If you feel you need subscribe to iTunes Match or Apple Music - Subscribe to iTunes Match – Apple Support or Join Apple Music on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC - Apple Support
