Turning off a lost iPhone 6s

My iPhone is lost, and I want to shut down the possibility of others reading my stuff, 'contacts', emails, messages, etc. Can I do that from my Mac Air or from an ipad that has no Sim card?

You can set it to lost mode so it gets locked, from a Mac or an iPad as long as the iPhone has find My iPhone turned on, but you cannot actually turn it off.
