apple mouse not connecting during os installation

Reinstalling macOSX 10.13.6 on iMac mid 2010. Created bootable USB but during installation, I get a spinning wheel while the mouse is attempting to connect. The batteries are good, I get a blinking green light on the mouse, but the bluetooth will not connect, system is stalled.

Cannot seem to move past this phase, not sure what to do next.

Reset the SMC and NVRAM.

That you’re re-installing can mean there’s a latent hardware error, as that’s a fairly common problem with older hardware, and that can then lead folks to try to re-install, which then gets tangled with the underlying hardware error.

Run hardware test.

Try a wired mouse, just to try to get further.
