When I hold down Command and Shift and 4 , it will allow me to crop an item, but then when it displays it on my computer screen the photo is blank . Anyone have an idea what setting needs to be corrected? thank you

Try CMD+Ctrl+Shift+4, capture an area, open a new Text Edit document & CMD+v to paste, is it still blank?

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
