My very old macbook is very slow. It is also stuck with operating system 10.11.6. If I upgrade my hard drive, will I be able to update my operating system, too? I've upgraded the RAM in the past. Thanks!

No. Upgrading the drive will not allow you to upgrade the OS beyond where you're at now (unless your machine IS compatible with a later version and the only reason you can't upgrade is lack of disk space).
That could be anything from a 2008 MacBook to a Mid 2012 MBP.
Assuming it's the 2008 aluminum MacBook. You've hit the end of the line.
It can't run anything higher than 10.11.6.
