I've been successfully taking screen shots by pressing Shift, Command, 4 and then dragging to capture a specific area and then they go to my desk top. However, all of a sudden they become an email. Does anyone know how to stop this?

Press "command shift 5" click on "Options" and change the setting to "Desktop".
