Using my iMac in Target Display Mode

I've connected my MacBook Air to my new iMac using a Thunderbolt cable and adaptor (thunderbolt 2 to 3) but it is not mirroring the display from the laptop when I press Command-F2. The iMac is new and the Macbook Air is 2 years old.

A new iMac does not support Target Display Mode.

Please read the fine print, at > Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support

"iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) and later iMac models can't be used as Target Display Mode displays"
