I am trying to transfer my iPhoto pics from my old apple desktop computer to my new MacBook Pro laptap. It says iPhoto isn't supported in this version of macOS. How can I get my pics added to my photos on laptop?

You can transfer your iPhoto Library and use Photos to convert it to a Photos library.
Launch Photos with the option key held down. From the resulting dialog, choose your iPhoto Library. Photos will create a new library from your iPhoto media.

I highlighted the iPhoto library but wasn't sure if I should hit create or what the next step is. I took a screen shot of what it looks like.
I did and then I highlighted iPhoto. After I did then this popped up

I see you already have a Photos Library, assuming it is not just a toy library you used to check out Photos, you might need to merge them.
What version of iPhoto were you running?
