Unlock uk iPhone for use in Australia

I have a iPhone in the uk and want to use it in Australia, apparently I have to unlock the iPhone itself to use it in Australia. Can I easily do this by going into store?

I believe that is to unlock the sim. They informed me the actual iPhone itself needs to be unlocked via apple

Do not contact them, contact your carrier, the one you pay your cellular bill to. They are the only one that can authorize an unlock. Carphonewarehouse is not a carrier.
