I successfully connected a Dell vga display via the Thunderbolt 2 port to my 2012 iMac The same display connected to the 2019 iMac with Thunderbolt 3 does not work using a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. Hate to buy a Thunderbolt 3 to vga adapter if that won't work either. Any thoughts?

The Thunderbolt adapter does not work for non-Thunderbolt displays. You need a USB-C to VGA adapter.
