Can I buy an iPhone at the Apple store and later connect it to AT&T on an existing plan by swapping SIM cards?

Yes, if you buy the AT&T version, or a carrier unlocked version. Even if you chose the AT&T version, if you buy it outright and pay in full, it will be unlocked. Swapping out your SIM will put that device into your existing AT&T plan.
