how can i tell if the warning below comes from apple????

If the information above looks familiar, you can ignore this message. If you have not signed in to iCloud recently and believe someone may have accessed your account, go to Apple ID (https://appleid.apple.com) and change your password as soon as possible.

This is one of the few instances where apple does send an email, and this one looks to be an actual Apple email.
The appleid link is the real Apple ID url, and the text is correct. If it had your name after the "Dear" intro, its fair to say this is from Apple.
Also check the email address it is from, and that it was sent to only your email address, and not "undisclosed recipients" or other email addresses that are not your own.
If you or someone that knows your Apple ID recently used it to log into the iCloud website, then this email is normally generated.
