How can I open a program that may be 32-bit so that it can update to 64-bit?
I purchased software from brick and mortar store when download did allow install, stating it it not 64-bit.
Is there a way to allow Mac to open so that software cane updated?

No. You may have to purchase the 64bit version if there is one. Hard to say since you didn't mention the software's name. Check with the vendor.
