At present when I try to to this change it states I cannot do this change to a .me.com address although currently using a bt internet account.

Did you look at the article below? When you get a new email address from your new provider, you can change the existing address to the new address. You could also get a Yahoo or AOL email address to use as your Apple ID address.

Does the @iCloud or @mac address work?
Based on what I have read, I suggest you leave your Apple ID email address as a 3rd party email address because you have more flexibility if you need to change the email address because the Apple ID got compromised. I also have read of many people who were locked out of their accounts when they forgot their password. Since the recovery email address is the @iCloud email address, if you forget your password, you also can't access your email to get emails from Apple to recover your account. You can set a rescue email address, but for some people, this hasn't worked.

I have a major problem with leaving the 3rd party email address as my Apple ID because I am changing my broadband provider and will therefore lose this email address forever! This is why I need to change it!
