Get a warranty for an iPhone bought through Apple by using the IMEI

I was told that you can get a warranty for an iphone bought directly through apple by just using the imei number for the phone?

You can add AppleCare+ to the basic 1 year warranty within 60 days of purchase. See this Apple link—>AppleCare Products - Apple
