Music and more on the HomePod?

My son got a (crappy) Echo Dot for Christmas from his mother. In order to listen to music on it, he has to subscribe to Apple Music. Do I have to do that? Or can I just play music from my playlists on my iPhone, or stream Pandora from my iPhone? The HomePod is already hideously expensive, so I would rather not have to spend even MORE money having to subscribe to Apple Music. Also, can I ask Siri through the HomePod questions? Have her turn the lights on and off? Stuff like that? Thanks!

Read the blurb here: https://www.apple.com/homepod/

You can AirPlay from iTunes or your iOS devices. You can ask Siri questions, not all of which it can answer. You can control HomeKit capable smart devices.
