Can’t see Macintosh HD in Disk Utility or Recovery

I can’t see Macintosh HD in either Disk Utility or in the Recovery Assistant. I’ve been using an external hard drive as startup for the past few months, and now want to erase my Macintosh HD (assuming this is what the built-in internal drive is called), but it doesn’t show up. I can see all other external drives but no internal drive whatsoever. What is wrong?

As den.thed states above, the internal drive is failing/failed.

How old is the iMac? You can find the specifics by navigating to Apple menu > About This Mac

Your options are:

a) replacement of the internal drive

b) continue to use and boot from an external drive

c) replace the iMac with a new(er) machine
