Updated to OS Catalina. Need help converting iPhoto library to Photos.

Our family photos are stored on our iMac which is several years old now. We upgraded to OS Catalina. I understand iPhoto is now gone. We are trying to get Photos to open the iPhoto library. The photos app is stuck "updating library" at 1% complete for several days. The photos should still be on the hard drive and they are backed up in time machine. Can anyone help?

Hey Westrichmark,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

I see from your post that your Photos library after updating to Catalina is stuck. I have a lot of photos on my Mac and know they're important to have. I'd like to help.

If you've been stuck at 1% for days, I would suggest force quitting the Photos app and trying again:

Providing the details below can also help isolate.

  • Are you connected to a reliable internet connection?
  • How much free space do you have on your Mac?
  • How many photos and videos are there? This can affect the time it takes to update.

Cheers!
