i cant hear when i make calls on my iphone

when I make calls, the speaker is greyed and I cant hear the caller and they cant hear me

iPhone 7, iOS 13

If you can't hear a person on a call or voicemail or if the sound isn't clear on your iPhone - Apple Support

If the microphones on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch aren't working - Apple Support
