Unlocking Iphone

I recently moved overseas and need to unlock my paid off iphone so I can purchase a sim card. I bought my phone at an At&t store in the states. Any advice?

Can you call AT&T in the US and have them unlock the iPhone?

OR you can go here-->>https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/ and request the unlock. It is a very straightforward procedure however I am not sure whether you are required to be an customer to get it unlocked. I doubt it however give it a shot.
