Can I pay by Apple pay but get refund by debit card?

Hey,

I bought stuff from store and paid by Apple pay. Then for some reason I have to return the good and the store said I have to use the same card when I paid to get the refund. However, I used my corresponding debit card for refund but not my phone's apple pay.

So, is the apple pay's card the same one with the real debit card? As they have different number I really worry I cannot get the money back. But the debit card I used get the refund is the card linked with my apple pay and used for purchase the good.

Please let me know how could I fix it if I cannot get the refund.

The different card number is so confusing...
