Volume drop off since latest software update for iPad Pro

Following the 13.3.1 software update for my iPad Pro, the volume level for my notification alerts has significantly dropped off. I’ve tried pushing the external volume button to max as well as the slider in the Sounds section of settings, and this barely increases the sound cue to a more audible level. I’ve also tried seeing if other sound selections are louder than the one I’m using (Tweet), but they aren’t. This is the first I’ve ever experienced this problem. Is anyone else experiencing the same issue? If so, have you found a fix? Seems like a software issue related to the latest update as that’s when this problem started.

This certainly isn’t an issue that I’ve seen any previous complaint.


The first and easiest step is to try a forced-restart of your iPad. This often resolves any odd issues.

If this doesn’t resolve the problem, we should try changing the levels in Sound:

Settings > Sounds


This may appear counter intuitive, but set the volume low, then force-close the Settings App and restart your iPad. After the restart, return to Settings and set the level again to maximum. If may help to disable Change With Buttons - as this will completely isolate the audio-level setting for Notifications from the master Volume for all other sounds on your iPad (the master volume can still be adjusted using App-sliders or the physical buttons).


If you still have no success, then I recommend that you ensure that you have a recent iCloud or iTunes backup of your device, then follow the full Restore process. This will install a fresh copy of the most recent version of iOS/iPadOS that is supported by your device - and reset all settings to “factory” settings; at the end of the restore process, your iCloud/iTunes backup is also restored to your iPad:

Thank you for the suggestions. I had tried both a normal restart as well as a soft re-boot. Neither one fixed the issue. I also tried repeating this exercise with the external buttons disabled, and that didn’t fix it either. As this was not an issue until one of the latest updates, I wonder if Apple programmed in some kind of sound level dampener.

If you’ve tried restarting without success, then your only remaining self-fix is to follow the instructions already given - and complete a full system restore from a PC/Mac. This installs a completely fresh OS. It’s not as nuclear as it sounds - your data will be safe due to your backup - but this procedure is very likely to be the only path to self resolution of the problem.


The only other alternative is to seek help directly from Apple. In addition to going through the restart route, they will follow the restore route anyway - so you might as well give this a go yourself.
