Ear speaker cutting off on phone call on iPhone XS Max

this has only starting happening within the last couple of months and when I’m on a phone call my phone is just a year old and when ever I get a phone call the top speaker cuts off and I have to put it on speaker to here the other person however whenever I put it back to ear speaker it sounds fine for a bit then cuts off again and I can’t hear?! Anyone know why
