Use internal GPS on Apple Watch during workouts

Is there a way to force an Apple Watch to use its own GPS during workouts instead of the iPhone it’s paired to? It drains the battery on my phone as I’m also streaming music from it.

Hi JOrd1234,

As per my experience using Apple Watch, series 2 and above are equipped with GPS that will work automatically when your iPhone is not with you.

Along with that here is an option for you to enjoy music while working out. You can too listen from your watch : https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204691#applemusic

The Apple Watch Always tries to use the iPhone radios (including GPS radio) whenever possible, as the Apple Watch battery is very small, and Low Energy Bluetooth requires far less power than the GPS chips in the Apple Watch.

So if your iPhone is within range, it will use the iPhone's GPS.
