Do you have to pay for everything on Apple

I was given a used Ipad. It appears that Apples wants to charge for everything, even when I sign on it asking for my credit card. Do they really want me to pay for every time I sign on and how my do they charge for things? Do they charge for me to do email?

Normal Apple ID requires a valid payment method. That doesn’t mean it will ever be used unless you purchase or subscribe to a paid service or app. There are many apps that came pre-installed on your iPad. You can also download free apps and many Apple services, such as basic iCloud storage, messaging, email, etc, are free.

You can also set up an Apple ID without a credit card.
