Why does my ipad say the version 12.4 is up to date??

It sounds like you may have the original iPad Air. If that is the case, then iOS 12.4.6 is the latest iOS that it will run. To be able to run anything newer than that, you would need to get a newer iPad.

Thx. In General, about, it says model name is iPad Air and nothing else (like pro or version 3 etc). Is this an original that I can not update?

If that iPad Air cannot upgrade beyond iOS 12.4.6, you own a 2013 iPad Air 1st generation.
