A Few Thoughts:

  • Create a New User:

Just create a temporary user. See if you can then eject it.

  1. Login: as an Administrator
  2. Go into: System Preferences
  3. Click: Users & Groups
  4. Unlock: the Lock
  5. Click: the “+” button
  6. Create: an Administrator user

Afterwards, remove the user. Use the “-“ button to rid of it, while logged in as another administrator.

  • Use Another Mac - Power off First:

If need be, plug the external drive into another Mac. Eject it on that device. But, prior to removing it, shutdown the Mac.

  • Remove While in Safe Mode:

Boot into Safe Mode (Hold Down the shift key upon boot). Many preferences are set aside while booted in to Safe Mode — perhaps a preference for ejecting items.

As for Removal Via the Cursor:

Drag it over the Trash, or click on the eject button for the drive in Finder. This is on the left side of the window by default. Open up Trash to be able to access this button.
