First generation Apple Pencil

The following iPad models support the first-generation Apple Pencil:

  • iPad Pro, 12.9-inch (2015)
  • iiPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation)
  • iPad Pro, 9.7-inch (2016)
  • iPad Pro, 10.5-inch (2017)
  • iPad Pro, 12.9-inch (2017)
  • iPad (2018) and iPadpro 10.2 -inch
  • iPad Air 3 (2019)
  • iPad mini 5 (2019)

And current none Pro models that continue to have lightning ports

These devices have a Lightning port and this is necessary as part of the pairing process

None of the above work with the Second generation

Similarly Second generation Pencil is supported by

iPad Models with USBc port devices

  • iPad Pro 12.9- Inch (4th generation)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation)

And all future Pro USBc devices

The first generation device can’t pair with these units

Reason

Pencil first generation is paired and charged via the lightning port on compatible devices

Pencil second generation is paired and charged via the magnetic port on the side of compatible devices

They simply aren’t interchangeable.

Some have tried a Dongle from Lightning to USBc on the later Pro devices without any success afraid to say
