iMac (Late 2013) fan running very loud

I have recently bought a second-hand iMac (Late 2013) and the fan is running very loud.

The incidence and duration of this excessive fan noise is intermittent but nonetheless annoying.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal?

(Btw: I have run Apple Diagnostics and this came up as no problems found.)

Thanks.

First starters try resetting the SMC, as per >How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

If that doesn't help, then there are several other possibilities.

  1. Dust is clogging the air intakes or heat sink and the iMac is running hot.
  2. There is a runaway or failed process that is causing excess CPU tempurature.
  3. There is a third party Sensor Based Fan Control software that is not setup correctly.

Your best bet at this point, is to run EtreCheck Pro and post back with the Report

In addition if you have installed any Temperature Monitoring or Fan Control software, then please post some screenshots of it as well.

Have you blown the dust out of the intakes lately?

What temperatures does this App report? Especially the GPU.

This App can be used to speed up the fans, all my iMacs would be dead without it.

Never ever ever drop fan speeds below the speed that the Mac itself is calling for.

This is just to see if temps are the cause, do not slow the fan down or it could totally fry the iMac.
