Recently I updated my macbook air. It updated and restarted. After opening, I saw there was an update available. But it already took my 8.23 GB storage. On the otherhand, my macbook is not updated. Now what should I do?
Did you run the installer after downloading it? Just getting it doesn't install. Sounds like you did, but I'm not certain from your description.

First, make sure what version is currently installed. Go to the Apple menu, and choose About this Mac.
Also, how much free space do you have?
One common problem these days is that the system drive can be just too full to install the update.
8.23GB, wherever you saw that figure, is not enough. You need at least some 20GB of free space just for normal working of the system.
If the Catalina installer was downloaded, it is in the Applications folder, and is called "Install macOS Catalina".
Press command-shift-A to open the Applications folder, locate the installer and double-click to run.
DON'T follow the recommendation to install 'cleanmymac'!!!!
This is to be considered malware for all intents and purposes and never let anywhere near your mac.

The fact that you think I'd be thinking of posting spam here is truly disheartening for me. That wasn't my intention at all !
I would like to say that I am in no way related to any app endorsement, let alone any Malware.
When Catalina came out in October, I was super excited to get the new update and the first time I downloaded it, the installation failed and my system went back to Mojave but the storage was still being used. Same happened to a friend of mine in college.
The only thing that worked was using the cleaner in CleanMyMac to remove system junk. I just thought that making a detailed post for what helped me would help out ibtisam26 but clearly you do not want me anywhere near here.
I mean, spam? Ouch. You could've just said that you don't recommend installing anything but you straight up reported me.

I'm glad that it worked for you, but this terrible piece of software has borked so many macs...
I stand by my calling it malware. And I am not alone on that.
In one thing we agree: installing junk is the main cause of mac problems.
Since Mojave 10.14.4 is being shown as the installed MacOS version. You probably want to update Mojave to 10.14.6 first. At least that was what I got recommended back when I upgraded to Catalina. Then install Catalina.
It sounds like your and your friends problems were same as mine. Storage is using, but mac is still in Mojave. But when u faced this problem, did u find any application for Catalina in your application folder?
I went , and it shows me Mojave. My mac has now 97GB space. Before update It had 105GB space available. It took my space but it is not updated yet.

Cleanmymac has a history of screwing up MacOS installations. I wouldn't recommend it either to be honest.
My macbook shows me is macOS Mojave version 10.14.4. Then first should I update my mac to Mojave10.14.6 first? And from where I will do it? My macbook already wants update for Catalina.
Unfortunately I did not find that application though I searched. I think there is an another problem
